A Peek Inside My Mind
Speed
Automated Slack workflow for headline approvals.
Efficiency changes everything. Perhaps it's the editor in me, but I'm always looking for ways to close gaps, cut unnecessary steps, and streamline. It's no different for quotidian work than a 10-page research paper: Eliminate redundancy to make what matters shine.
Systems
I hate reinventing the wheel. Nothing drives me crazier than wasting time repeating information (or effort) in means that can be consolidated through a system.
My team often found me tinkering with tools to help us be able to find information faster or do our jobs more effectively. I naturally gravitate toward intuitive organization, and love to design systems (bookmarks, repositories, pinned resources, documentation, and the like) that help people do their daily work with ease.
Seems simple, but these common resources were often scattered. I saw a need and solved a problem by putting all our top resources in one place.
Scale
"Swim lanes" of responsibility I created for being able to articulate who owns which part of the content process. This reduced friction by clearly defining boundaries and paving the way for cohesive communication across multiple stakeholders.
I aim to improve methods in ways that help the newest person. Meaning: Is all this head knowledge written down somewhere? What if someone gets let go tomorrow or goes on unexpected medical leave during crucial deadlines?
I think about these kinds of things, and seek opportunities to bake in long-term thinking, so the organization can keep growing and thriving because it's set up for success.
Further Examples of Big-Picture Thinking
...with Small-Picture Thoroughness
Some samples of systems thinking: "Fun" job title (created by our Director of Brand Editorial) depicts truth; emoji workflow triggers automated response; headline review in Workflow Builder makes content requests visually streamlined through form input; hand-drawn sketch outlines the different multi-disciplinary functions and how we each contribute to the overall content marketing team vision. You can see here hints of my values — kindness, creativity, and a little dose of humor.
